Internet-Based Rehabilitation Found to Be Effective After Knee Replacement Surgery
May 4, 2015
Knee replacement surgery has been shown to be effective at reducing pain and improving function, though controversy remains about the optimal rehabilitation regimen following surgery. The potential benefits of a supervised physical therapy program are often offset by the added costs, inconvenience and time.
In a recent study published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, Dr. Trevor G. Russell and his colleagues compared internet-based rehabilitation to traditional physical therapy following knee replacement. In this prospective, randomized, level 1 study, the authors found that telerehabilitation was safe and well received by patients. More importantly, after 6 weeks, no differences could be discerned between the 2 groups of patients suggesting equivalency.
