Whiplash! Ouch!

Whiplash is an injury to the neck after a sudden increase and decrease in the movement of the head and neck like a whip.  Many things can cause this injury including sports and other trauma, but it typically occurs in motor-vehicle accidents.

The symptoms of whiplash include pain, stiffness, and loss of head and neck motion.  Pain is typically located in the upper spine and should not travel to the arms or feet or cause symptoms such as numbness, tingling, weakness, or loss of bowel or bladder control.  If so, contact a medical professional immediately.

Treatment of whiplash injuries begins with rest, activity changes, and anti-inflammatory medications to minimize irritation and decrease muscle cramps.  Following, a stretching and strengthening program of the neck and surrounding muscles is an important part of improving pain and stiffness and making also creating a swift return to activities.
