Spice It Up With Saffron to Ease Post-Workout Pain

We know that exercise is good for us.  We also know that sometimes exercise hurts and causes pain.  Many of us may even take anti-inflammatory medications before and after exercise to try to mitigate pain and swelling associated with exercise.

However, a recent study published in the Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine shows that perhaps we should be supplementing our diets with a commonly found spice: saffron!

Dr. Abbas Meamarbashi found that saffron supplementation could reduce the severity of exercise-induced delayed-onset muscle soreness. In addition to its apparent anti-inflammatory properties, saffron may also have potential benefits when it comes to cancer and heart disease prevention. While the spice itself is incredibly expensive and rivals the cost of gold by weight, saffron supplements have become a popular option. So, if you can afford it, the next time you work out, go and treat yourself with a savory post-exercise meal rich in saffron. Of course, a regular stretching and strengthening program and a proper warm up and cool down routine can also prevent swelling, inflammation, and injury.
