Cervical Strain: A Pain in the Neck!

Cervical Strain: A Pain in the Neck!

January 13, 2015

Neck pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal conditions encountered by generalists and emergency room physicians. Neck pain can be a manifestation of conditions ranging from a simple muscle strain to infection. So, it’s always a good idea to consult with a healthcare professional prior to starting a therapy program for your neck.

Cervical strain refers to neck pain as a result of an injury such as whiplash in the absence of structural or neurological symptoms. The treatment of acute cervical strain can include a brief period of immobilization, rest, anti-inflammatory medications, followed by a stretching and strengthening program. For people with chronic neck conditions (arthritis), a regular stretching program has been shown to diminish pain and improve function. In a recent study published in the journal of BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders, Karlsson and colleagues found that a home exercise program improved pain and function in women with chronic neck pain. The best results were seen in patients who regularly performed these self-directed exercises.
