Avoid Shovel Slip This Winter
December 24, 2015
Want to laugh? Watch this man attempting to shovel snow slip for 9 seconds.
Even with the warm weather this winter, these are some wise tips to keep in mind for snowy mornings.1. Pick the Right Snow Shovel
A shovel with a curved handle or an adjustable handle length will minimize painful bending, requiring you to bend your knees only slightly and arch your back very slightly while keeping the shovel blade on the ground. Gravel or kitty litter spread on the ground will help keep your feet from slipping.2. Warm Up Thoroughly
Then, stretch your low back and hamstrings (the large muscles in the back of the thigh) with some gentle stretching exercises. SimpleTherapy has exercises for both lower back and hamstring programs.
3. Use Ergonomic Lifting Techniques
Bend at the hips, not the low back, and push the chest out, pointing forward. Then, bend your knees and lift with your leg muscles, keeping your back straight.
Best of luck, but if you do take a tumble, SimpleTherapy is here to help you get back on your feet!
