September 25, 2015

What separates us from other animals is our ability to oppose our thumbs and use our hands to perform complex and fine motor tasks. It is, therefore, not surprising that if your thumb or fingers hurt, this can lead to significant limitations and even disability.

Arthritis of the base of the thumb is one of the most common hand afflictions causing stiffness, soreness, and weakness of the hand. Other manifestations included a weakened grip and also cracking of the thumb joint with activities.

The management includes rest, activity modifications, anti-inflammatory, and a stretching and strengthening program. Bracing and cortisone injections can also be tried to relieve symptoms.
